Brian -- thanks for your comment. I hadn't even thought about the past YPC debates in this context, and I admit it challenged me a bit to do so. A player like Derek Jeter on a losing team probably isn't a hall of famer, because Jeter was "rock solid" in the name of winning. We SHOULD praise the 9-5 dad for the reason he might lead a "boring" lifestyle -- it's not about the job! Similarly, the fruits of a pastoral position ought to be considered as part of the "why".

I was thinking more about a debate I was having in my own head about the ongoing discernment. What if Pastor Mike, both my church leader and a friend, and I disagree on a certain theological point? What do I do then? I came to recognize that perhaps his ability to challenge my faith, encourage debate, and then (I would expect) continue to provide pastoral guidance would be the "rock solid-ness" I should focus on, and perhaps less about a particular issue. Of course, I'll have to revisit the question when/if such a disagreement occurs.

Paul,
Enjoy reading these daily and generally agree with many opinions on your posts. I feel on this one though you called out me a bit and the situation at YPC. I think it was significantly too large of a leap going from a dad doing his job to making a misguided decision due to losing focus on what's really important. I think what's really important is not just the "pastoral care" but sharing the reason the care if being done. Does it matter that I do nice things because it makes me(and hopefully others) feel good? Or is it more important that I am glorifying God, and letting others know it, because of all he has done for me including blessing me with the gifts to do the good deeds. Yes doing the basics is important but so is WHY you are doing the basics. If a pastor of all people is not comfortable sharing the Lord as "their reason", then how can members of their flock be willing to do so?

Not sure why but couldn't get this one out of my mind so thought I'd write.
Keep up the posting!

Thanks for your comments, Leslie. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to attend the sessions. Hopefully I can sway Pastor Mike to share the outline...

I heard Tony Evans speak on this and he said said that we are not really grateful for our daily bread because in our homes we probably have 6 months of "daily bread". It may not be what we want, but we could live. Same with God. SOmetimes we have what we may not want, but we have what we need. GOd knows.......thankfully.
Thanks for all you do.
